Design your vacation together and stay together

Life design - an intentional approach to making life decisions- has gained popularity among individuals seeking purpose-driven lives. Now the concept has expanded to couples, and most recently to one of the relationship's most challenging areas: vacation planning.

The Expectation Gap: The Hidden Vacation Stressor

The key issue lies in misaligned expectations. While problematic in any situation, this misalignment becomes particularly destructive during high-stakes periods like vacations. One partner might envision relaxation while the other anticipates adventure. One might prefer meticulous planning while the other values spontaneity. Add external expectations from family and friends, and you've created a perfect storm for conflict.

According to research from the University of Washington, divorce rates consistently spike during the periods immediately following summer and winter holidays. This pattern appears across counties and years.

"People tend to face the holidays with rising expectations, despite what disappointments they might have had in years past," explains researcher Julie Brines. "They see the vacation as an opportunity for a new beginning. The rise in divorce filings afterward shows what happens when reality doesn't match their expectations."

The Power of a Shared Vacation Vision

Linda Ternstedt, founder of the Grow Together Method and creator of the Vacation Vision Workshop for couples, emphasizes that creating an attractive, shared vision is one of the most crucial elements of successful couple vacations.

"What makes vacation vision work is that it shifts couples from oppositional thinking - your way versus my way - to co-creative thinking. When partners visualize themselves enjoying the experience together, they naturally begin solving problems collaboratively rather than competitively."

The Vacation Design Approach

The vacation design process involves more than selecting destinations and activities—it's about co-creating a shared vision for the experience:

  • Clarify individual needs and desires: Before discussing specific plans, each partner identifies what they need from vacation time (restoration, adventure, connection, achievement).

  • Explore emotional expectations: Discuss how you want the vacation to feel rather than just what you want to do.

  • Create a shared vision: Find the overlap between individual desires to establish common ground and identify complementary needs.

  • Focus on the positive - what you love to do together

  • Built in flexibility: Design structured flexibility that accommodates both planning and spontaneity preferences.

Beyond Compromise: Finding Synergy

The benefits of shared vacation visioning extend far beyond the vacation itself: Couples who master this process often apply the same principles to other areas of life, from weekend planning to career decisions. The vacation becomes a laboratory for developing relationship skills that serve partners in everyday life.

Research has proven that shared experiences during vacations are positively associated with couples' day-to-day functioning at home (Journal of Travel Research, 2021). Those who engaged in higher levels of shared experiences during their vacations, such as effective communication, showing affection, or experiencing new things together, reported higher levels of couple flexibility and cohesion following their vacations, regardless of the number of vacations.

Couples who implement vacation design report three significant benefits:

  • Deeper connection: The design process itself becomes an intimate exercise in understanding each other

  • Increased resilience: When unexpected changes occur, the shared vision provides stability

  • Extended enjoyment: The vacation enjoyment begins with anticipation and continues through shared memories

"Perhaps the most powerful benefit," Lonn adds, "is that a compelling shared vision acts as an anchor during vacation challenges. When flights are delayed or weather disrupts plans, couples with a strong vision focus on adapting together rather than blaming each other. They're united by the emotional experience they're creating, not just the logistical details."

As vacations represent significant investments of time, money, and emotional energy, the vacation design approach offers couples a framework to transform potential relationship stressors into opportunities for growth and connection. By synchronizing expectations before departure and creating an attractive vision to anticipate together, couples can create experiences that strengthen rather than strain their relationship, making the vacation truly restorative for both the individuals and the partnership.

Vacations should be about adventure, romance, and fun - not arguments. A little communication and compromise can go a long way, ensuring your getaway is filled with cherished memories instead of heated exchanges. Happy travels!
